Economic and political analysis

2018 will be characterised by tightening monetary policy and credit conditions, increasing risks to global trade, and deeper geopolitical concerns in the Middle East.
On May 8th the US president, Donald Trump, announced he would withdraw the country from the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose all nuclear-related sanctions on Iran in six months' time.

Following the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, the EU, alongside Russia and China, has declared that it is "committed" to saving the agreement.
The impact of these proposals is likely to be muted by a lengthy implementation timeline and other onerous regulatory requirements, suggesting that China's financial services will not see a surge in foreign investment.

An evaluation of the likely outcome of presidential elections in the country.

Latin America's major currencies have weakened by between 5% and 20% in recent weeks as investors have shunned emerging markets amid the ongoing withdrawal of monetary stimulus by OECD countries.

We forecast that total FDI inflows into the EU11 will average US$49.3bn per year in 2018‑22. These totals represent higher growth rates in FDI inflows than for the other emerging-market regions.
