ESWI Science Policy Flu Summit 2018: bringing influenza vaccination of children to the next level

In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommend a seasonal flu vaccine for every child aged 6 months and older. But in Europe the situation is quite different, with different policies in different countries.

This diversity stands in contrast with the overall uniform burden from influenza in children. All children are vulnerable to influenza and its complications. An estimated 20 to 30% of children get influenza every year. And many of them end up in the doctor’s surgery or the hospital.

It is therefore high time to bring childhood influenza vaccination to the next level. You are kindly invited to join other influenza stakeholders on 28 September 2018 in Leuven for a day of lectures and debates on pediatric influenza vaccination. The aim of the meeting is three-fold:
• to discuss the scientific evidence with respect to vaccinating children against the flu
• to formalize the current consensus in a widely accepted position paper
• to develop a roadmap of urgent actions to better protect children against influenza

The meeting is organized by ESWI, in close cooperation with its partner organizations.

Prevention of vaccine-matched and mismatched influenza in children aged 6–35 months: a multinational randomised trial across five influenza seasons

Despite the importance of vaccinating children younger than 5 years, few studies evaluating vaccine prevention of influenza have been reported in this age group. A new paper in the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health evaluates efficacy of an inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (IIV4) in children aged 6–35 months.
