Subject: Division of Viral Hepatitis Leadership Announcement

Dear colleagues:

Times of transition can be challenging, and it is with mixed emotions that I am announcing that Dr. John Ward has accepted an opportunity with the Task Force for Global Health where he will assist the organization in developing global viral hepatitis prevention, treatment, and control programs. Dr. Ward will begin this assignment as a secondee from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on March 5, 2018

Dr. Ward made major contributions and accomplishments throughout his 13-year tenure as CDC’s Director of the Division of Viral Hepatitis, from raising the profile of viral hepatitis nationally and internationally to developing groundbreaking guidelines on screening for hepatitis C; from documenting the association between the resurgence of new hepatitis C and B infections with the opioid crisis to supporting the development of the first HHS National Viral Hepatitis Action Plan; from implementing cutting edge test and cure pilot programs to envisioning the National Academies of Sciences report that ultimately proposed goals for viral hepatitis elimination in the United States.

We will immediately announce a detail opportunity to identify someone to serve as the Acting Division Director while we conduct a national search for a permanent Director for the Division of Viral Hepatitis.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH
