This year the 10th edition of the Global Forum on Health Promotion (10GFHP) originally planned to be hosted in Ottawa, Canada will take place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first Global Forum was convened in Geneva to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Ottawa Charter and has become an annual event of the Alliance for Health Promotion.

The unique feature of this year ‘s event is that it will be held in conjunction with the Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) with the support of our member Health Nexus. The overall theme of the Conference is “Global Health in a Changing Climate”.

We are looking forward to an exciting landmark event honoured by a video message from WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and an interview with Professor Ilona Kickbusch, a leading authority on health promotion,  global health and health diplomacy. Dr Ruediger Krech, Director of the Health Promotion Department in WHO, will deliver a keynote speech.

The 10th Global Forum will address the challenges for Health Promotion and Civil Society Organisations in the pandemic times. More specifically, how to use what we have learned so far for reshaping the future priorities, what we need to do differently and how a stronger WHO-Civil Society partnership can contribute to finding a “new normal” allowing Healthy Lives and Well-being for All.

More information on the programme and practical arrangements of the Global Forum will follow shortly. For any questions don’t hesitate to contact us here

The new website of the Alliance will provide regular updates on the 10GFHP and the CCGH.

Health Promotion and COVID-19

Read here an interview given by Dr Ruediger Krech, WHO Director of Health Promotion, to the German Association for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion on Covid-19 and how health promotion is contributing to the response.

"Health promotion carries out very specific functions during a pandemic and in policy-making during “peace-times”. Epidemiologists provide the data and prepare quarantine measures, but, for example, increasing compliance or acceptance for those measures or bringing together the various interests - these are tasks for health promotion." - Ruediger Krech

The 2020 progress report is the first progress report of the Global Action Plan (GAP) for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All initiative and covers the first eight months of implementation since its launch at the UN General Assembly in September 2019.

Community and civil society engagement is one of the 7 Accelerator themes of the Global Action Plan (GAP) with the aim of "Ensuring that communities and civil society receive the support that they need to be meaningfully engaged enables them to bring their lived experience, perspectives and expertise to knowledge generation, policy-making and health responses that are rights-based, accountable and ensure that no one is left behind.” p. 34, Global Action Plan

World Mental Health Day 2020 - An opportunity to kick-start a massive scale-up in investment in mental health

On 15 September more than 250 participants attended the WHO and the World Bank webinar on Investment in Mental Health where they talked about why and how to invest in mental health. Investment is the theme of this year's World Mental Health Day on 10 October. For more information click here

“World Mental Health Day is an opportunity for the world to come together and begin redressing the historic neglect of mental health,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.

The World Federation for Mental Health is an international membership organization founded in 1948 to advance, among all peoples and nations, the prevention of mental and emotional disorders, the proper treatment and care of those with such disorders, and the promotion of mental health. The Federation was the initiator of World Mental Health Day.

The annual Mental Health Forum celebrating the World Mental Health Day will be held virtually on 8 October from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM Geneva time.
