Subject: RE: Notice of 16th IALI Congress and General Assembly 2020
Importance: High
Dear IALI members (via bcc)
I am writing to advise you of the postponement of this year’s Congress and General Assembly which had been due to be held on 8/9 June 2020.
I’m sure this will come as no surprise to you, and is an inevitable consequence of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The event was to have been held at the ILO in Geneva, but its Governing Body has now cancelled its own International Labour Conference (originally scheduled for 25 May to 5 June). This decision was taken in the light of severe worldwide travel restrictions due to the pandemic, and the need to ensure the health and wellbeing of delegates and staff. The IALI EC support this decision and are applying the same considerations to our Congress and General Assembly.
IALI’s statutes require us to hold a General Assembly every three years. Our 15th General Assembly was in September 2017 in Singapore. We are still hopeful of holding our 16th later this year. But we will need to keep the COVID-19 situation under review and will provide further details in due course.
We are grateful to members who have submitted abstracts for the June Congress. We will carry these forward into our planning for a Congress later this year. However the delay provides more time for other abstracts to be submitted – we are extending the deadline to 1 September.
Given the postponement, we propose to engage with our member on some policy issues by correspondence in advance of the General Assembly – on some of the actions set out in our three year plan which can be found on our website.
We are also aware that, as well as the broader societal implications, the COVID-19 pandemic will be having significant and particular implications for LIs worldwide – not just as individuals and employers but also in respect of the impact on their roles and responsibilities as Regulators. Policy on the pandemic is obviously being led by public health professionals, but we are aware that the implications of some of the policies on the workplace have been less well thought through. We will need to consider whether to devote some time at the 16th Congress to consider this topic. We would be grateful for your thoughts on this proposal. Please feedback to the IALI Secretariat at Nicholas_YIP@mom.gov.sg, Alvian_TAN@wshi.gov.sg.
Thank you.

Subject: Notice of 16th IALI Congress and General Assembly 2020
Dear IALI members
Please find attached a Notice of 16th IALI Congress and General Assembly. This is scheduled to be held in ILO Building (Room V), Geneva, Switzerland, on 8 and 9 June 2020.
We will also hold the IALI Executive Committee Election, on 9 June (PM), and would like to invite members who have the passion to step forward and serve on the Executive Committee.
Prior to the General Assembly, IALI will also hold a Triennial Congress over one and half days at the same venue. This will be held on 8 June and 9 June (AM). The theme of our Congress is “Challenges and Opportunities for Labour Inspectorates in Securing Fair and Decent Work Worldwide”. Reference to attached Call for Papers, it will cover topics such as
(i) International developments in labour inspection,
(ii) Labour Inspectorates working together to improve performance and impact,
(iii) Innovative approaches to labour inspection e.g. legal reform, competency building, digitalisation.
Submission deadline: 22 March 2020. The presentation could be in English, Spanish or French (with translation provided during the Congress). Attendance to the Congress is free for members.
To help us promote sharing and exchange of diverse views and perspectives from labour inspectorates/agencies all over the world, do share this with your colleagues and counterparts.
Thank you.
