Introductory remarks for the President of the session

On 25 September 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 70/1, containing the document “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The 2030 Agenda is a plan of action for people, the planet, prosperity, peace and partnership, which all countries and stakeholders, acting in collaboration, will implement. Two years and a half have passed since the Sustainable Development Goals are in force. Thirty-five European countries have already reported voluntarily to the United Nations High-level Political Forum on their implementation of Agenda 2030. Last year at the Regional Committee, the roadmap to implement the SDGs has been endorsed by all European Member States. This roadmap provides the strategic path for the implementation of the SDGs, fully aligned with the Global Program of Work.

Honorable minister,

As you know the prime minister of Georgia has been invited to attend the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in September 2018 (invitation letter attached for your convenience). Unfortunately he has other imminent commitments and cannot travel to Rome.

Consequently Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, would like to extend the invitation to you.

Please, let us know as soon as possible, if you would be available for the round table discussion on progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for the health and well-being of all at all ages. The round table is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, 18 September, under the agenda item on implementation of the roadmap to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, building on Health 2020 and review of the joint monitoring framework.

If this is the case, we will send you more detailed scenario early next week. We can also draft some initial bullet points that could help you preparing for your intervention.

We will be in touch with your team.

Thank you and best regards,
