Dear WHO Secretariat:

This is in reference to the application made by India for the WHA
formal side event on Commemoration of World No Tobacco Day 2017 during
the Seventieth World Heath Assembly (WHA70)

Georgia is writing to express support to India's application for this event.

At this stage, we just need your support communicated to WHO. There are no financial or logistical expectations from Georgia. We will develop the programme of the event in coordination with FCTC Secretariat.

Dear sir/madam,

I am contacting from Georgia. My name is Nino Maglakelidze and I am technical focal point for WHO FCTC. I have received an e-mail bellow from Andrew Black regarding the side event organazed by India during WHA. He was requesting if Georgia would be interested to support this event. Certainly this is very interesting and important event for us, but I would like to kindly ask in what terms Georgia is expected to support the side event.  Could you please provide a bit more details.

Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Hi Nuka,

I hope you are well.

Please see the attached request from India to gather support from countries for the World No Tobacco side event at WHA.

I wonder whether Georgia would consider providing support?

Thanks,

Dear Mission Focal points,

Please find below information on the process for applying for WHA70 side events.

Applications for Member State side events will be accepted between the period: 22 February and 27 March. The schedule of side events will be shared electronically during the first week in April.

In order to apply for a side event please complete the attached application and send it to: cmpmail@who.int by COB 27 March.

To facilitate transparency, all applications received will be uploaded on the WHO SharePoint site.

When preparing applications, please note that:

1.       A total of 26 side events will be scheduled (an average of 4 side events each day, with the exception of Tuesday evening, when the item on Post of Director-General will be discussed). Of those events, 22 will be selected based on the criteria outlined below.  The Secretariat will chose 4 events from among the remaining applications, with a view to have the most well-balanced and robust schedule of events possible. This may involve, for example, selecting events on emerging topics.

2.       During the application and selection process, each delegation may submit or co-sponsor a maximum of 3 proposals.  In other words, each Member State may only associate itself with a TOTAL of 3 proposals. After the selection process has been completed, Member States will be provided an opportunity to co-sponsor events until 22 April.

3.       Member States may confirm their co-sponsorship of a side event by sending an email to veag@who.int

4.       Side events will be scheduled during the lunchtime or in the evening and may last for up to 90 minutes.

5.       The following criteria will be used to establish priority in the selection process:

·      Linkage of the proposed topic to the theme of WHA70- “Advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Building Better Systems for Health”

·      International public health significance of the proposed topic, which will be assessed by links to the agenda of WHA70, and consideration of the number of regions affected.

·      Multi-regional support for a proposal

·      The overall level of support for the event among Member States, as measured by the total number of Member States co-sponsoring the event

6.       Applications that are incomplete or received after the deadline will not be considered

7.       While the rooms for the side events will be made available free-of-charge, any catering and interpretation services involve costs. The Member States requesting side events will be responsible for any costs incurred.

8.       There is a separate application process for side events organized by non-State actors in official relations with WHO. For information about that process, please contact: nonstateactors@who. int

9.       Organizations that are not in official relations with WHO should not be invited to co-organize side events with Member States, as such organizations do not have the necessary security clearance to access to the Palais des Nations.

Best regard,

Dr Timothy Armstrong

Director,

Department of Governing Bodies

World Health Organization
