Dear Ambassadors and Attachés
This year’s World Health Assembly (WHA), which marks the 70th anniversary of World Health Organization (WHO), will highlight positive steps on the pathway to Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
As you are aware, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO, initiated a call to action for all countries to offer three concrete commitments towards UHC at the WHA.
This represents a unique opportunity to highlight Primary Health Care (PHC) services, such as immunisation, as a key part of integrated health services delivery to achieve greater equity, healthier and prosperous communities and also reduce medical impoverishment through out of pocket expenditure. National immunisation programmes offer an ideal platform upon which to build a robust and resilient primary-care system and realise the UHC ambition.
In this context, Gavi respectfully suggests three concrete pledges for you to consider:
• Guarantee that every child is reachable by front line health workers to receive immunisation as part of PHC services;
• Strengthen national supply chain systems to ensure that all receive access to health commodities and vaccines;
• Commit to train, sustain and retain front line health workers in adequate numbers and skills mix and who are equitably distributed to ensure access to immunisation as part of PHC.
At the upcoming WHA, Gavi looks forward to the adoption of WHO’s thirteenth General Programme of Work by Member States and we will work to support its implementation. In this context, I am also sharing with you some suggestions for consideration on the agenda items related to Polio (WHA71 agenda items: 11.3 and 12.9), Non Communicable Diseases (agenda item: 11.7) and Cholera (agenda item 11.2). If you have any questions related to them, please let me know.
Together we will continue to promote a comprehensive and coherent approach to health, focusing on strong health systems. We look forward to working further with you to achieve this vision. If you would like further information, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Susan Brown
