The colleagues from WHO/Headquarters asked to share following information :
The Director-General will address the plenary in the afternoon of Monday 21 May, 2018 under agenda item 3. In his keynote speech to the 71st World Health Assembly, Dr Tedros will outline major achievements from his first year in office, including:
• Developing the 13th General Programme of Work, 12 months ahead of schedule;
• Developing the transformation plan to make WHO more agile ;
• Appointing a senior leadership team in which all regions are represented, and in which women outnumber men for the first time;
• Mobilising political momentum for universal health coverage;
• Strengthening emergency preparedness and response, including the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board;
• Engaging proactively with partners to leverage our collective strength;
• Establishing an Independent High-Level Commission on NCDs, including the launch of an initiative to eliminate trans-fats;
• Working with the Global Fund, Stop TB and civil society to find the 4 million missing TB cases;
• Launching a new initiative to address the health effects of climate change in small island developing states;
• Improving the internship programme to make it more equitable.
Reflecting on the 70th anniversary of WHO’s founding, Dr Tedros will emphasise the ambitious nature of the 13th General Programme of Work and outline keys to success, including political commitment, partnerships, and a transformed WHO.
