Subject: tobacco-control
Dear Sopo,
This is to inform you that we planned a technical mission on tobacco-control for the end of Aril to provide further support, visibility and advocacy in the area of tobacco control.
We have just learnt that Dr Tim Baxter, one of the Directors at the UK Ministry of Health, is interested to join WHO mission. Among others he is responsible for tobacco (and the FCTC 2030 project from the funder’s perspective). The visit would be two-fold: (a) to join the celebrations of the new law coming into force and (b) to see how FCTC 2030 is supporting countries at the “grass roots” level.
We kindly ask you for your agreement regarding Tim Baxter’s visit, so we can continue preparations.
The basic idea is to have the following activities for the entire mission (Dr Baxter may not attend all of them, as he will only be in Tbilisi on the 1 May, while some of the activities may take place already on 30 April):
- PR conference in the UN House (hopefully to include the UN Resident coordinator or any other representative; i.e. Unicef, UNFPA)
- Meeting with the Minister of Health
- Meeting with the NCDC to discuss further work in FCTC2030
- Meeting with the representatives of Police / Ministry of Interior, to discuss/support enforcement
- Internal WHO meeting to discuss FCTC2030 and financial aspects (action plan, budget distribution)
- Any other meetings and site visits as applicable.
You can also see that most of the activities are planned with other institutions. For sure it would be great if the mission could meet the minister.
We kindly ask you for your feed-back and guidance.
I also copy NCDC, as this is an important information for them too.
Thank you and best regards,
Marijan Ivanusa
