Blazing the Trail for Women in IRS

In Mali, a conflict-ridden country where nearly half the population lives below the poverty line, Maimouna Sanogo is a woman making a difference. She helps protect people in her country from malaria as a supervisor on the Abt Associates-led, President’s Malaria Initiative-funded Africa Indoor Residual Spraying project (AIRS). This year, AIRS protected more than 850,000 people in Mali from malaria including 22,400 pregnant women and nearly 154,000 children under 5. Read more.

Achieving standardization across AIRS countries

The Africa IRS (AIRS) project manages indoor residual spraying (IRS) operations and logistics in 13 endemic countries. AIRS Operations Director, Allan Were, has developed pocket-sized job aids in hopes of achieving a higher level of standardization in operational performance. Read more. 

 

 

A Struggle without Borders


A New Insectary to Increase Burundi’s Entomological Studies

“The fight against malaria should be seen as a struggle without borders,” said Laurent Iyikirenga, AIRS Medical Entomologist, explaining why he moved his work in vector control with the Rwanda National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) to work with the Burundi NMCP and the Africa Indoor Residual Spraying Program. Progress against Malaria in Rwanda

 

Approximately one in five outpatients tested positive for malaria in Gisagara District, Rwanda from January to August 2013. The President’s Malaria Initiative-funded Africa Indoor Residual Spraying project (AIRS) is protecting people from malaria in Gisagara and two other districts in Rwanda through indoor residual spraying (IRS). In 2013, the Abt Associates-led AIRS project sprayed nearly 225,000 structures protecting more than 975,000 people from malaria in Rwanda including approximately 16,000 pregnant women and 147,000 children under 5.
