Dear Abt Colleagues,
Today at the close of Abt’s annual Chief of Party Conference in Bethesda, we announced the winners of the Fourth Annual Abt photo contest.
Thank you so much to everyone who entered!
We received more than 70 submissions this year, again showing us the wide range of expertise, innovation, and impact at Abt.
Jay Knott, and Kathleen Flanagan and I picked the 12 finalists based on the image’s depiction of Abt’s impact, its emotional power, and its technical merits.
Then YOU picked the three winners by liking the photos on Abt’s Instagram page or emailing your votes to AbtPhotos@abtassoc.com.
We received a great response from Abt staff!
On Instagram, the photos received dozens of likes. We also received email votes from more than 150 Abt staff. Thank you for your participation!
The winners of this year’s photo contest are:
THIRD PLACE
PHOTOGRAPHER: Jeanna Holtz, Principal Associate for International Health Division
CAPTION: A child from Gimbichu Woreda, Oromia Region of Ethiopia who is covered by community-based health insurance (CBHI). The government of Ethiopia is scaling CBHI with support from the Abt Associates-led Health Finance and Governance project, funded by USAID.

SECOND PLACE
PHOTOGRAPHER: Melinda Ojermark Principal Associate for International Health Division
CAPTION: Sister Corina Aceng, founder of Sister Angioletta Primary School in Gulu, Uganda, with four of her students. Malaria once affected many of her students and hindered their attendance and performance. Today fewer than 10 of the 170 boarding students contract malaria during a term – thanks in large part to indoor residual spraying by Uganda Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) Phase II, led by Abt Associates. Sister Aceng praised the program.

CAPTION: A trained service provider offers a new mother postpartum family planning counseling following the delivery of her twins at the Dr. Jamil Tutanji (Sahab) Hospital in the Capital Governorate of Jordan. This is one of the public hospitals in Jordan upgraded by the Abt Associates-led, USAID-funded Health System Strengthening II (HSS II) project.

Congratulations to Ranya, Melinda and Jeanna! Each of them received a mounted print of their photo suitable for display, and Ranya’s shot will be featured in this year’s annual review, which will be distributed June 25 at Abt’s Annual Meeting.
Next year’s photo contest begins NOW. Email your photos to AbtPhotos@abtassoc.com as you take them all year long.
Thank you again to everyone who entered.
Best,
Mary
