Dear Colleagues,
I want to share news about two Abt Associates board members who are making important transitions: Anne-Marie Slaughter and Gary Perlin.
Yesterday, the New America Foundation announced that Anne-Marie Slaughter will be the Foundation's next president, effective Sept. 1.
A current New America board member, Anne-Marie will work out of both New America's Washington, D.C. and New York offices. As you know, she is currently a Princeton professor, former Dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and the former Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. State Department.
The New America Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. New America emphasizes work that is responsive to the changing conditions and problems of our 21st century, according to the press release announcing Anne-Marie’s appointment. It has domestic and foreign policy programs focused on national security studies, technology, asset building, health, energy, education, the economy, and work and family balance.
With that portfolio, clearly Anne-Marie is a great choice to lead this organization!
Gary Perlin, currently the Chief Financial Officer at Capital One, has announced his intention to retire at the end of the year, and to step down as CFO in late May. In sharing news of Gary’s decision to retire, the CEO of Capital One said, “Among his many contributions, Gary’s counsel and leadership were instrumental as we successfully weathered an unprecedented financial crisis and emerged in an even stronger position to grow our company and create shareholder value.”
In a recent email to his Abt Board colleagues, Gary specifically noted that he wanted to be sure they were aware of the news “…because everything we do has the potential to affect reputational capital.”
He added, “I am pleased to be starting the next stage of life with only one professional commitment, and even happier that commitment is to serve with you and the rest of the Abt team in pursuing our shared mission.”
We are indeed fortunate to have Gary and Anne-Marie on our Board of Directors.
Best,
Kathleen
