Several foreign governments have banned travelers from flying or crossing into their territory from countries that have been affected by the Ebola epidemic. An updated list of land border closures, and aviation and visa restrictions are listed below. Please note that this list may not be comprehensive. Travelers should be aware that policies are constantly changing and that the information provided is sometimes incomplete and inconsistent. Furthermore, there are often discrepancies between a country’s stated entry/exit policies and how these policies are actually enforced. Travelers are advised to contact the embassy or health ministry of their destination country to clarify their individual circumstances and prepare their trips accordingly.
• Antigua and Barbuda: banned travel from Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone; banned entry of individuals who have visited these countries in past 21 days.
• Belize: banned entry of individuals who have visited affected countries in West Africa in past 30 days; suspended issuing of visas to nationals of affected countries.
• Botswana: banned non-citizens traveling from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• Cameroon: closed border with Nigeria; banned travel from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• Cape Verde: banned non-citizens traveling from the DRC, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and those who have visited the U.S. in past 30 days; banned entry of U.S. citizens.
• Chad: closed land border with Nigeria; banned travel from Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• Colombia: banned entry of all individuals who have visited Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal or Sierra Leone in past 28 days.
• Equatorial Guinea: banned maritime travel from “west, central or east Africa”; suspended issuing visas to travelers from central and west Africa.
• Gabon: banned travel from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• Gambia: banned flights from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone; banned all travelers who have been to these four countries in the past 21 days.
• Guinea-Bissau: closed border with Guinea.
• Guyana: banned individuals traveling from affected countries in West Africa; suspended issuing visas to individuals coming from these countries.
• Haiti: banned entry of individuals traveling from Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone.
• Jamaica: banned entry of residents of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone; ban on travelers who have visited Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone in past 28 days; Jamaican nationals subject to quarantine for 28 days upon arrival from the aforementioned countries.
• Kenya: banned non-citizens traveling from (or passing through) Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; closed Suam crossing at Ugandan border.
• Mauritania: banned entry of citizens from Liberia and Sierra Leone.
• Mauritius: banned entry of nationals from the DRC, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone; banned entry of individuals who have visited these countries in past 60 days.
• Namibia: banned non-citizens traveling from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• Rwanda: banned non-citizens traveling from Guinea, Liberia, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, and banned all travelers who have been to these four countries in past 22 days.
• Sao Tome and Principe: banned travel from the DRC, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• Saudi Arabia: banned pilgrimage travel from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
• Senegal: closed land border with Guinea; banned travel from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; banned entry of individuals who have visited Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone in the past 40 days.
• Seychelles: banned individuals traveling from (or passing through) the DRC, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
• South Africa: banned non-citizens traveling from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
• South Sudan: banned flights from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone; banned entry of citizens of the DRC, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and individuals who have visited these countries in the past 60 days.
• St. Lucia: banned entry of individuals traveling from Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone; travelers from Nigeria must present a medical certificate declaring them Ebola-free.
• St. Vincent and the Grenadines: banned entry of individuals traveling from Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone.
• Trinidad and Tobago: banned entry of individuals traveling from the DRC, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, or Sierra Leone; individuals who have visited these countries in past six weeks subject to quarantine period of up to 21 days upon arrival.
• Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states – Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe – have stated that travelers coming from Ebola-affected countries (according to the World Health Organisation, WHO) would be monitored for 21 days and that travel to member countries for any gatherings would be discouraged. The SADC provided no details as to how member countries will carry out the associated screening and follow-up and it is likely that countries will have individual processes. There are also reports that some countries require health documentation for entry. Travelers are advised to contact the embassy or health ministry of their destination country to clarify their individual circumstances and prepare their trips accordingly.
