The SHOPS project works to increase access to life-saving HIV care by engaging the private sector in financing and service delivery. Below are highlights from three of its groundbreaking initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa. |
The SHOPS program in Côte d'Ivoire supported the establishment of a network of private clinics to expand the provision of HIV and AIDS services into the private sector for the first time. Since its launch in September 2014, 195 providers were trained, 6,947 clients were tested, and 131 clients were enrolled on antiretroviral therapy. A new video highlights early accomplishments of the program. |
Namibia Program Profile (New Publication) The SHOPS program in Namibia worked to develop a sustainable model for delivering voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) through engagement with the private sector. SHOPS advocated for VMMC to be included as a preventive insurance benefit, a global first. |
Tanzania Program Profile (New Publication) The SHOPS program in Tanzania established the first scope of practice for public and private sector nurses and midwives, which allows for greater task sharing and expands roles in delivering VMMC, prevention of mother-to-child transmission Option B+, and prescribing antiretroviral therapy. |

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector. |
