November 2014 Newsletter

Dr. Anwanzi Ahui of Clinic Centrale Abobo never felt right turning away patients who wished to receive HIV testing and services in the private sector. He knew that many people from all income levels felt uncomfortable accessing HIV services from the public sector due to stigma. However, without a mechanism for offering testing or HIV medication in the private sector, he resigned himself to turning people away, knowing those people may choose to forego treatment completely. When Dr. Ahui heard about a pilot private sector network for HIV, supported by the SHOPS project, he was intrigued. He knew there was a ready market, so he signed on to be part of the pilot.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
