The SHOPS program in Ghana promoted the introduction of zinc for treatment of pediatric diarrheas through private sector channels. SHOPS used a four-pronged approach looking at the enabling environment, ensuring a sustainable supply, and improving knowledge and treatment practices of the provider and caregiver. The team visited clinics and launched a campaign to educate consumers. This short video highlights the accomplishments of the program.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
