Private Health Sector Insights - April 2015

USAID/Madagascar is expanding its use of pregnancy test kits for family planning activities based on the results of SHOPS research. Community health workers (CHWs) will use the kits to determine whether or not a woman is pregnant before providing hormonal contraceptives. A SHOPS study conducted in 2013 showed that pregnancy tests increase contraceptive clients among health workers, an important step in expanding access to family planning methods. The USAID mission will train CHWs to use the test kits. They will then distribute them throughout the country. This effort supports the USAID Forward agenda on identifying and scaling up innovative, breakthrough solutions to intractable development challenges.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
