Data published by Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) Bangladesh in November 2014 indicate considerable demand for fee-based health information services. The SHOPS project contributed to the development of this national mhealth program. In just two years, it enrolled more than one million users, including 278,000 pregnant women, 780,000 new mothers, and 96,000 family members. MAMA Bangladesh demonstrates that users are willing to pay for credible and entertaining mobile health information, which has significant implications for sustaining mhealth interventions for underserved populations.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
