Private Health Sector Insights - January 2015

At the Global mHealth Forum in December 2014, USAID announced an alliance with Orange, one of the world's leading telecommunications operators, to develop mhealth innovations to improve patient care across Africa. SHOPS facilitated the formation of the alliance, and it is supporting the initial activities to develop a mhealth platform to serve West Africa. The USAID-Orange partnership will focus on improving the quality of and access to health care through collaborative efforts that build on the expertise and resources of both organizations in partnership with national governments.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
