Private Health Sector Insights - August 2015

August 3 - 8, 2015, the SHOPS project trained 30 private health providers on the provision of family planning products and services in Côte d'Ivoire. The providers represented the 15 health facilities in Abidjan that comprise the SHOPS-supported private sector HIV network, a first of its kind in the country. The six-day training enabled the clinics to expand their range of family planning services. Topics included reproductive health, breastfeeding, menstruation (e.g, amenorrhea), and a wide range of family planning options, including barrier methods, oral contraceptives, injectables, IUDs, and implants.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
