World AIDS Day: Private Sector Contributions to an AIDS-Free Generation

Many developing countries struggle to sustain gains made in HIV and AIDS prevention, care, and treatment as donor funds decline. The private health sector is often overlooked as a resource, despite the integral role it plays in most national health systems and its ability to bring additional resources-human, financial, and infrastructure-to support government efforts. On World AIDS Day, the SHOPS project highlights its work to increase the availability, improve the quality, and expand the coverage of HIV products and services through the private sector.

The SHOPS project is USAID's flagship initiative in private sector health. It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries. The project focuses on increasing availability, improving quality, and expanding coverage of essential health products and services in family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV and AIDS prevention and care through the private sector.
