Dear Colleagues,

According to the WHO, the overall Ebola outbreak total is now at 26,593 confirmed, probable, or suspected cases, with 11,005 deaths.

Happily, Liberia has reported no new confirmed cases for 42 days, and the country has been declared free of Ebola virus transmission by the WHO. Out of the nine countries affected in this outbreak (Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States), only Guinea and Sierra Leone continue to report new infections.

Guinea and Sierra Leone reported 18 cases last week, the lowest weekly total this year. Each of the two countries reported 9 cases. Cases were confirmed in only three districts, the lowest total number of districts to report a confirmed case in the 3 most-affected countries since May 2014. According to the WHO, of 55 districts in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone that have reported one or more confirmed cases of EVD since the outbreak began, 41 have not reported a case for over 6 weeks. For three weeks, no new healthcare worker infections have been reported, keeping the total at 868 infections, including 507 deaths.

On 2 May the AIRS Project in Liberia remobilized a TCN entomologist to Monrovia. This brings our staff footprint in the country back up to three, including our two CCN staff who have been working throughout the EVD epidemic.

With Liberia being declared Ebola free, new cases trending downward in Sierra Leone and Guinea, and no indications of further spread of the disease, we will be discontinuing our weekly Ebola reports.
