World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 each year to enable people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS, show their support for people living with HIV and commemorate people who have died from the disease.

To support this important occasion, we will be hosting a lunchtime program from Bethesda where you will hear from two experts in the field of HIV and AIDS who are making a real difference in the DC metro area:

·         Meghan Davies, Director of Community Health for Whitman-Walker (WW).  Meghan oversees all prevention and education activities at WW, including the Breast Health Initiative; HIV counseling, testing and education initiatives, both mobile and clinic-based; WW’s HIV Peer Support Program:+1; WW’s two DEBI interventions: SHIELD and Healthy Relationships; WW’s retention and re-capture program focused on African American women in Wards 5-8: Positive Pathways; and other outreach activities.

·         Adam Tenner, Executive Director for Metro Teen AIDS (MTA).  Adam has been Executive Director of Metro Teen AIDS since 2001 and has worked in a variety of HIV prevention and adolescent health promotion capacities for over 20 years. Adam’s hard work and MTA’s high quality efforts have been recognized throughout the city.  In 2011, MTA was one of only three organizations awarded a Kaiser Permanente “HIV/AIDS Diversity Awards,” which recognize organizations for outstanding achievement in HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

I encourage everyone to join us for this event, which will be video conferenced to all U.S. offices and also to reach out to find the organizations that are helping people living with HIV and AIDS in your own communities.

Let us know of any activities you might have planned in your area and we will be sure to note them at the Bethesda-based event and include a mention of these activities in our social media outreach.  We also will be featuring Abt’s work in HIV and AIDS on our website and in social media.

Please join us December 1, from 12:00 – 2:00. Pizza will be available in Bethesda.

Please look for a calendar invite from Katherine Brouhard, IHD’s technical coordinator for HIV and AIDS, and call-in information will be forthcoming in a future email.

Best,
