The Brain Gain in Nigeria 

The Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) project, funded by the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), partnered with Nigeria’s Nasarawa State University, in Keffi, to establish the first insectary in the state to improve the country’s entomological monitoring capacity. Insectaries provide an optimum laboratory environment for rearing mosquitoes, which are needed for entomological monitoring to support malaria programs. Read more. 

 

 

Mobile Money Pays Off

Carrying large amounts of cash into the field to pay seasonal workers increases the risk of theft and fraudulent activities. To reduce risk, the President’s Malaria Initiative-funded Africa Indoor Residual Spraying Program (AIRS) in Madagascar piloted an innovative mobile banking system during the 2013-2014 spray campaign to automate payments and reduce risk.

Have Pit, Will Travel 

In hard to reach areas, AIRS spray teams often camp out for days at a time, as it is difficult or impossible for them to return to a central operational site for the end-of-the-day cleanup. To increase efficiency and improve environmental safety, AIRS piloted the use of mobile soak pits during the 2013-2014 IRS campaign in remote areas of Madagascar. Topping It Off

 

Introduced first in Benin in 2013, and now used in Mali and Zimbabwe, soak pit covers are becoming a standard practice for the Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) program. Read more.
