Greetings.

As you are all aware, the extremist group Al Shabaab carried out a violent terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya over this last weekend.  Their target was the Westgate Mall, a large, modern, and upscale shopping center frequented by locals and expatriates alike.  Al Shabaab’s stated purpose in carrying out this tragic attack was to retaliate for Kenya’s participation in the peacekeeping mission to Somalia in support of the African Union.  Although casualty figures are not yet final, the death toll was close to 70 persons with over 200 injured.

We have received many inquires this morning regarding the situation and I am very heartened by the genuine concern you have all shown for our Abt family in Nairobi.  We have two field offices in Nairobi with the Afyainfo and SHOPS programs.  Subsequent to the attack, our programs initiated their emergency notification protocols to verify the safety of their personnel.  While we mourn the loss of so many innocents, I am happy to confirm to you that all Abt staff in Nairobi have been safely accounted for.  I know that those directly affected by this attack and their families are very appreciative of your thoughts and concern.

Best Regards,

Jay
