Approaches to Generating and Formatting Impact Analyses:
Stata and SAS

In graduate school we learn the theory of doing analysis and minimal software skills to do the analyses on toy data sets. Then we come to Abt and find out that we are actually expected to do these tasks on large data sets, with dozens (or hundreds) of outcomes, and with bells and whistles in the analysis (e.g., robust standard errors, testing for heterogeneity in subgroup impacts). Then, once we have the results, we’re expected to generate pretty tables that can be dropped easily into reports and presentations—with minimal reformatting and no loss of accuracy. Help!!!
The M&E and DMAC Methods Centers are here to help. This pair of presentations was crafted to present strategies for regularizing these analyses, such that the coding is consistent and the formatting of output useful. Examples will be taken from a variety of past and present projects. We will also be soliciting YOUR thoughts and ideas!
This first of two presentations will consider issues using Stata as an analytic tool; the second presentation, on October 31st, will consider issues using SAS as an analytic tool. The basic concepts will be the same in each presentation, but as each analytic tool offers its own challenges, the strategies detailed will be different in each presentation.
