Building an Abt-Enterprise M&E System
Oh MandE! Come and give and take. We won’t send you away.*

According to SongFacts. Com, original lyrics by Scott English (1971), as “Brandy,” changed by Manilow, in U.S. recording to “Mandy.”
To honor both versions our goal is to create an Abt-branded M&E system, aka “a MandE BrandE.”
Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) is at the heart of Abt’s mission. It is a required contractual activity across all International projects and central to the U.S. technical assistance projects. Most important, the use of measurement data can mean the difference between failure and positive impact, by allowing for continuous improvement in project operations.
Given this common, critical need, Abt is investing in building our own enterprise-wide M&E solution (MandE). The solution will include standard “out-of-the box” features for data collection, indicators, and reporting common across projects. It will also provide rapid customization tools for project specific information. With a company-wide-solution as a starting point, projects can spend less time devising systems and more time on actual monitoring and evaluation.
Come and see how far we have come on this work in progress, offer feedback into the next round of development priorities, and start thinking about whether MandE can be adopted to your next effort.
Though not at all a Fanilow, Brian Sokol, is a Senior Technology Strategist with Abt’s Client Technology Center (CTC), where he designs and implements comprehensive solutions to meet the complex data and technology needs of large-scale projects. Prior to moving to the CTC, Brian spent seven years in SEP, contributing technology thought leadership, developing systems, providing technical assistance, and managing IT tasks. Most recently, he was the IT Director of SSA BOND, Abt’s largest domestic project.
