The Monitoring and Evaluation Methods Center
presents:
An Empirical Program of Research on Evaluating the Performance of Non-Experimental Methods: Results from Two Within-Study Comparisons
Presenter: Vivian C. Wong, University of Virginia
This presentation introduces the theory and practice of using within-study comparison (WSC) approaches for evaluating non-experimental methods in field settings, and highlights results from two recent WSCs.
This presentation will address common methodological issues that arise in the design, implementation, and analysis of WSCs. Additionally, results from two recent WSCs which evaluate the performance of non-experimental methods in field settings will be reviewed.
1. Examines and compares the performance of three matching approaches for selecting school-level comparison units in education evaluation contexts.
2. Examines the performance of non-experimental approaches that use times series data, such as the interrupted time series, comparative interrupted time series, and difference-in-difference methods.
Wong will also offer suggestions for further work on improving non-experimental methods and practice for evaluating programs and policies.
