The Qualitative Methods Center
presents:
Multimedia Ethnography
Kristen Eglinton, Presenter
This talk will offer great insight into how digital ethnography can be applied in a social sector context similar to Abt’s core clients. It will focus on the possibilities and promise of multimedia ethnographic tools in development initiatives and research. Drawing on a recent information-communications-for-development project in South Africa, several methods will be discussed. There will be particular emphasis on the use of multimedia methods in developing and developed regions with little to no infrastructure (e.g., lacking mains electricity, internet).
Kristen is an applied social scientist with experience in community and youth engagement, ICT4D, and multimedia methods including digital storytelling. She has a background in multimedia art and education, and received her PhD in social and educational research from the University of Cambridge. Kristen's most recent book ‘Youth Identities, Localities, and Visual Material Culture’ (Springer, 2013) is an ethnography of youth lives in New York City and sub-Arctic Canada.
Digital story-telling, or participatory ethnography, is a great complement to these earlier Qualitative Methods Center talks:
Anna Jefferson’s talk on using ethnographies in evaluations, and
Revelation Global’s introduction to mobile ethnography.
