presents:

Using the Transtheoretical Model to Help People at Each Stage of Change

Janice Prochaska, Presenter

The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (TTM), or the Stages of Change, groups the change process into distinct stages of readiness, and provides approaches to help move people forward through the stages:

Precontemplation: not intending to make a behavior change

Contemplation: starting to think about changing behavior

Preparation: deciding to make a behavior change

Action: just beginning to take action to change behavior

Maintenance: change is made, working to keep it up

Join Dr. Janice Prochaska, President and CEO of Pro-Change, as she provides an overview of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (TTM) including the characteristics of people in each stage of change and how to identify which principles and processes of change to use at each stage of change. Dr. Prochaska will also share lessons learned from a Healthy Pregnancy project.

Dr. Janice Prochaska’s research on the Transtheoretical Model led to a contract with Electronic Data Systems and the formation of Pro-Change in 1997. The Model has been used on cutting edge issues like:

o   simultaneously reducing multiple risk behaviors and enhancing multiple domains of well-being

o   healthy weight management in children and adults

o   preventing bullying

o   keeping individuals out of trouble with the law

o   helping people be proactive about their health and health care

o   enhancing financial well-being

o   advancing careers with low populations, like women scientists.

Dr. Prochaska is President and CEO of Pro-Change and holds an adjunct faculty position at URI. She is one of the most published authors in the field of social work and earned her Master’s in Social Work from Wayne State University and her Ph.D. in Social Work Administration and Policy from Boston College.
