An Introduction to Social Finance and Social Impact Bonds
Caitlin Reimers Brumme and Nirav Shah, Presenters
Interest is growing within both the federal government and philanthropy for leveraging private sector financing to help scale up promising social interventions. These efforts – typically called “social impact bonds” or “pay for success” – often focus on investments that help save the government money, and thus are a natural fit for prevention efforts (such as efforts to prevent recidivism among recently released prisoners) and other efforts to reduce risk through improved resilience. Social impact bonds also feature program evaluation as a core component as the repayment of investors’ funds typically depends in whole or in part on the outcome of an evaluation of the funded program’s effectiveness.
What exactly are social impact bonds and what are the prospects for using them to support innovative social programs? What role does evaluation plan in a social impact bond? For answers to these and other questions about this emerging area, come to the brownbag talk by experts from Social Finance U.S. – the U.S. affiliate of the British NGO that sponsored the first social impact bond.
Social Finance US is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to mobilizing investment capital to drive social progress. Core to Social Finance's work is the Social Impact Bond - a new private-public financing tool to direct capital to evidence-based social services to facilitate greater access for vulnerable populations.
Caitlin Reimers Brumme is a Director on the Capital Markets Team where she leads the financial structuring and capital raising activities to drive social impact at scale. She brings investment insight to the Product Development Team to create optimized financing solutions tailored to achieve our public and private partners’ desired social and financial outcomes for each transaction. Specifically, she drives the development of outcomes pricing, financial projections and risk/return models, builds relationships with investors, and manages the execution of outcomes-based financing transactions.
Nirav Shah is a Director on the Business Development Team where he leads the organization's efforts to create innovative financing mechanisms to advance healthcare policy and eliminate homelessness. Nirav develops collaborative partnerships with key, multi-sector stakeholders to deliver financial solutions that funnel investment capital into preventative programs, including chronic disease management, permanent supportive housing for the homeless and better coordinated care systems for the underserved.
