At the outset of the new triennium 2020-2022, the ISSA has set ambitious objectives for strengthening its responsiveness to members and the practical value of products and services. In seeking this enhanced impact for members, the ISSA will be guided by four topical priorities. These are based on the input of the ISSA global membership, the key conclusions of the ISSA work on the ten challenges for social security and the outcomes of the World Social Security Forum 2019.

As we mark the World Day of Social Justice on 20 February, the United Nations reminds us that “Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations.” 

Does self-employment come at the cost of poverty in old age? A new report by the ISSA Technical Commission on Social Security Policy Analysis and Research, examines the rise of non-standard work and how it may affect on pension coverage in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The European Network of the ISSA organized an Innovation Workshop on the topic of the Use of Big Data in Health in Berlin on 27-28 January 2020, at the kind invitation of the German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds (GKV-Spitzenverband).

On 30 January 2020, a formal ceremony in Suva, the capital of Fiji, marked the official opening of the Focal Point for the Pacific Island Countries of the International Social Security Association (ISSA). 

The ISSA Communications Network is a network for social security professionals in charge of communication in ISSA member organizations. The aim is to strengthen our joint efforts in promoting the value of social security and work of social security institutions worldwide. 

An important milestone in the development of the social security cooperation between the BRICS countries (Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa), was the adoption of the BRICS’ Ministerial Commitment to Sustainable and Universal Social Protection, during the Global Social Protection Week, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The ISSA is sad to communicate the passing of Mr Wim Franssen, the ISSA Treasurer from 2004 to 2010. As Director International and Foreign Affairs of the Dutch Social Insurance Bank, Mr Franssen was for many years an active contributor to ISSA governance, meetings and publications.
